Service leadership
Leadership across both the NHS and the independent sector: Clinical Lead for Neurosurgery at the Essex Neurosciences Centre, Queen’s Hospital, Romford, and NHS England Spinal Network Lead for North East London and Essex; and in the independent sector, Responsible Officer at Fortius Clinic and Neurosurgery and Spinal Surgery MAC Lead at The London Independent Hospital.

Achieved during my tenure as Clinical Lead, Department of Neurosurgery, Essex Neurosciences Centre, Queen’s Hospital, Romford.
Service development
As Clinical Lead for Neurosurgery at the Essex Neurosciences Centre, Queen’s Hospital, since November 2022, I have focused on access, training and culture. In my view, good patient care comes through your staff, not around them.
Waiting times
Referral-to-treatment performance is the service’s best since before the pandemic, and the waiting list is down by more than 1,600.
June 2026
Scale
In 2025 the department held about 190,000 outpatient appointments (about 150 elective and 90 emergency operations a month) and published more than 20 peer-reviewed papers.
Hospital space
Theatre capacity increased from two to three daily sessions, and ward capacity expanded by 50%, in collaboration with Trust leadership.
Workforce and training
Appointed six new consultant neurosurgeons and introduced a 12-month complex spine fellowship, partly sponsored by industry, with an international intake. Fellows trained in skull base, neuro-oncology and spinal surgery, and a new Educational Lead and Simulation and Courses Lead.
Technology and new services
Launched a spinal robotics and navigation programme, secured approval for a dedicated endoscopic spine suite, and established a training pathway through which four surgeons now regularly perform endoscopic spine procedures, including day-case surgery.
